GCP Certification Path 2026: Which Google Cloud Certification Should You Get First?
Google Cloud’s certification lineup spans three levels: foundational, associate, and professional. Unlike AWS, GCP does not enforce prerequisites between levels — you can walk in cold and attempt a Professional-level exam on day one. That flexibility is useful, but it also means picking the wrong starting point wastes months of study time on material that does not match your role.
This guide maps every current Google Cloud certification, what each one actually costs and covers, and the progression path that fits your role — verified against the official exam pages at cloud.google.com/certification.

The Three Levels of Google Cloud Certification
Foundational
Cloud Digital Leader
- Who it is for: Non-technical roles, business stakeholders, project managers, anyone who needs cloud vocabulary without hands-on GCP work
- Prerequisites: None
- Format: 50-60 questions, 90 minutes
- Cost: $99 USD
- Validity: 3 years
This is Google’s equivalent of AWS Cloud Practitioner — a business-facing overview of cloud concepts, Google Cloud’s product families, and common use cases. No console time required. Google also offers a Generative AI Leader certification at the same foundational tier for a non-technical introduction to enterprise AI concepts.
Associate
Associate Cloud Engineer (ACE)
- Who it is for: Anyone deploying, monitoring, and maintaining GCP workloads day to day
- Prerequisites: None officially; Google recommends 6+ months of hands-on GCP experience
- Format: 50-60 multiple choice and multiple select questions, 2 hours
- Cost: $125 USD
- Validity: 3 years
ACE is the best general starting point if you have some hands-on cloud experience already. It covers setting up a cloud environment, deploying applications, and configuring access and security across Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Storage, and IAM. Read our full ACE study guide for a domain-by-domain breakdown.
Google also offers two other associate-level certifications — Google Workspace Administrator and Data Practitioner — for narrower Workspace-admin and data-analyst tracks respectively.
Professional
Professional certifications assume real hands-on depth. Google does not gate them behind prerequisites, but the exams are written for practitioners with 3+ years of industry experience, including at least a year on Google Cloud specifically. All current professional-level GCP certifications cost $200 USD and carry a 2-year validity period (shorter than the 3-year window for foundational and associate certs).
Professional Cloud Architect (PCA)
- Format: 50-60 questions built around published case studies, 2 hours
- Cost: $200 USD
- Design, development, and management of Google Cloud solutions end to end. The most broadly recognized GCP professional cert, and the natural next step after ACE for anyone on an infrastructure or architecture track. See our PCA exam guide.
Professional Cloud Developer (CDP)
- Format: 50-60 multiple choice and multiple select questions, 2 hours
- Cost: $200 USD
- Building and deploying applications on Cloud Run and GKE, including current coverage of AI-assisted development tooling. Best fit for application developers rather than infrastructure engineers. See our Cloud Developer exam guide.
Professional Data Engineer (DPE)
- Format: 50-60 questions, 2 hours
- Cost: $200 USD
- Designing and operationalizing data processing systems across BigQuery, Dataflow, Dataproc, Pub/Sub, and Cloud Composer. See our Data Engineer study guide.
Professional Machine Learning Engineer (MLE)
- Format: 50-60 questions, 2 hours
- Cost: $200 USD
- Designing, building, and productionizing ML models using Vertex AI, AutoML, and BigQuery ML. See our Machine Learning Engineer study guide.
Professional Cloud Security Engineer (CSE)
- Format: 50-60 multiple choice and multiple select questions, 2 hours
- Cost: $200 USD
- Designing and implementing security controls: IAM, Security Command Center, encryption, compliance frameworks. See our Cloud Security Engineer exam guide.
Google also runs Professional Cloud Network Engineer, Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer, Professional Cloud Database Engineer, and Professional Security Operations Engineer at the same tier, for teams specializing in networking, DevOps/SRE, database operations, or SOC work respectively.
Recommended Certification Paths by Role
Path 1: Cloud Infrastructure / Operations
- Cloud Digital Leader (optional, if new to cloud concepts)
- Associate Cloud Engineer — start here
- Professional Cloud Architect
Path 2: Cloud Architect
- Associate Cloud Engineer (optional if you already have hands-on GCP experience)
- Professional Cloud Architect — start here if experienced
- Professional Cloud Security Engineer (specialize)
Path 3: Application Developer
- Associate Cloud Engineer (optional)
- Professional Cloud Developer — start here
- Professional Cloud Architect (broadens your scope)
Path 4: Data and Machine Learning
- Associate Cloud Engineer (optional foundation)
- Professional Data Engineer — start here for data pipeline roles
- Professional Machine Learning Engineer — start here for ML-focused roles, or add after DPE
Path 5: Security
- Associate Cloud Engineer (optional)
- Professional Cloud Security Engineer — start here
Path 6: Non-Technical / Business Stakeholder
- Cloud Digital Leader — start and likely stop here
- Associate Cloud Engineer, only if your role shifts toward hands-on work
How to Choose Your First Certification
Do you have hands-on GCP experience?
- No, and your role is non-technical: Cloud Digital Leader
- No, but your role is technical: Associate Cloud Engineer — you do not need to pass a foundational exam first
- Yes, 1+ years: go directly to the relevant Professional certification for your specialty
What is your primary responsibility?
- Deploying and operating workloads generally: Associate Cloud Engineer, then Professional Cloud Architect
- Designing systems at the org level: Professional Cloud Architect
- Writing application code: Professional Cloud Developer
- Building data pipelines: Professional Data Engineer
- Building and deploying ML models: Professional Machine Learning Engineer
- Security controls and compliance: Professional Cloud Security Engineer
Should you get GCP certified if you already hold AWS certifications?
Yes, if your organization runs multi-cloud or you are targeting roles at companies that use Google Cloud specifically. The underlying concepts (IAM, VPCs, managed compute, object storage) transfer, but service names, defaults, and exam scenarios do not — do not assume an AWS cert prepares you for a GCP one without dedicated study. See our AWS vs. GCP vs. Azure certification comparison for a side-by-side look.
The Cost of a GCP Certification Path
- Cloud Digital Leader: $99
- Associate Cloud Engineer: $125
- Any single Professional certification: $200
- Renewal: professional certs renew every 2 years; associate and foundational certs every 3 years, either by retaking the exam or completing designated Google Skills renewal content
Compared to AWS, where professional-level exams run $300 and specialty exams $300, GCP’s professional tier is meaningfully cheaper per exam — but the shorter 2-year validity period on professional certifications means you renew more often over a career.
Start Your Google Cloud Certification Journey
There is no wrong GCP certification to pursue, but there is a wrong order for your situation. Match the certification to what you actually do day to day, not to what sounds most impressive on LinkedIn — an Associate Cloud Engineer who can operate GCP confidently is more hireable than someone who crammed for a Professional exam without the underlying experience.
StudyKits has practice questions for every major Google Cloud certification, with offline access and domain-level tracking so you know exactly where you stand before exam day.
