Both test hands-on operational skill — provisioning resources, configuring monitoring, managing access, and troubleshooting — rather than the higher-altitude design questions on certs like SAA-C03 or GCP’s Professional Cloud Architect.

They are close in level and intent, but the exams differ enough in format, cost, and content emphasis that the choice should come down to which cloud you actually operate. This guide compares both directly.

Exam Format Deep Dive

AWS SOA-C03

SOA-C03 gives you 65 questions in 130 minutes — 50 scored, 15 unscored pretest items you cannot identify during the exam. Questions are single-answer multiple choice or multiple-response (select two or three correct answers). This is a relatively new version of the exam: AWS retired the previous SysOps Administrator - Associate (SOA-C02) on September 29, 2025, and launched CloudOps Engineer - Associate (SOA-C03) the next day, dropping the old exam’s timed hands-on console lab entirely — every point on the current exam now comes from question responses.

The exam is organized into five domains: Monitoring, Logging, Analysis, Remediation, and Performance Optimization (22%); Reliability and Business Continuity (22%); Deployment, Provisioning, and Automation (22%); Security and Compliance (16%); and Networking and Content Delivery (18%). Containers (ECS, EKS, ECR, Fargate) and CloudFormation/CDK stack management are explicitly in scope — content that did not exist on the retired SOA-C02 version.

AWS recommends about one year of experience deploying, managing, and operating workloads on AWS, plus general systems administration background, though this is guidance rather than an enforced prerequisite.

GCP Associate Cloud Engineer

The ACE exam runs 120 minutes and contains 50 to 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions. It is delivered at a testing center or online with remote proctoring, and Google does not publish a numeric passing score for this or any other Google Cloud certification.

The exam covers five sections: Setting up a cloud solution environment (~20%), Planning and configuring a cloud solution (~17.5%), Deploying and implementing a cloud solution (~25%), Ensuring successful operation of a cloud solution (~20%), and Configuring access and security (~17.5%). The exam leans heavily on practical “how-to” ability with the Google Cloud Console and command-line tools — gcloud, kubectl, and gsutil — rather than abstract design questions.

There is no formal prerequisite, but Google recommends 6+ months of hands-on experience with Google Cloud before attempting it — a notably lower experience bar than SOA-C03’s recommended one year.

Where the Two Overlap

Despite different provider ecosystems, both exams test a similar shape of day-to-day operational knowledge:

  • Compute provisioning: EC2 instance types, AMIs, and Auto Scaling vs Compute Engine instances, machine images, and managed instance groups
  • Containers: ECS/EKS/Fargate vs GKE — deploying and operating containerized workloads
  • Monitoring and logging: CloudWatch (metrics, alarms, Logs Insights) vs Cloud Monitoring and Cloud Logging
  • IAM fundamentals: users, roles, and least-privilege policies vs IAM roles, service accounts, and organization policies
  • Networking basics: VPC subnets, routing, and security groups vs VPC networks, firewall rules, and Cloud Load Balancing
  • Infrastructure as code: CloudFormation/CDK vs Deployment Manager/Terraform-based workflows in day-to-day GCP operations

The console names and CLI syntax differ, but the underlying job — deploy it, watch it, secure it, keep it running — is the same skill set on both platforms.

Which One Should You Take First?

Choose AWS SOA-C03 First If:

  • Your infrastructure already runs on AWS, or your team is hiring for AWS ops roles
  • You want the current, container- and IaC-aware version of the exam rather than the retired lab-based SOA-C02
  • You are comfortable with a slightly longer exam and a modest step up in recommended experience

Match the certification to the cloud your team actually operates. Both exams sit at the same associate level and validate the same practical skill set, so neither is a meaningfully “easier” credential on paper — the real difference is the platform underneath it. If you split time across both clouds, SOA-C03’s slightly deeper recommended experience bar and its current focus on containers and IaC make it a reasonable first stop before layering GCP’s ACE on top, since much of the reliability, monitoring, and IAM thinking transfers directly.
