Cloud Certification Exam Day: The Complete Checklist (Online & Test Center)

You have studied for weeks. You have done hundreds of practice questions. You feel ready. Now comes the part nobody talks enough about: exam day logistics.

More candidates than you would expect lose points not because of knowledge gaps, but because of technical issues with online proctoring, anxiety from unfamiliar test center procedures, or poor time management during the exam itself. This checklist ensures that nothing outside your knowledge derails your exam.

Cloud Certification Exam Day: The Complete Checklist (Online & Test Center) -- hero

Online Proctored Exam Checklist

Online proctored exams offer convenience, but they come with strict requirements. Failing to meet them can delay or cancel your exam.

24 Hours Before the Exam

  • Run the system check. Pearson VUE and PSI both provide system test tools. Run these on the actual computer you will use for the exam. Do not assume your system is compatible — verify it.
  • Check your internet connection. Minimum requirement is typically 2 Mbps upload and download. Run a speed test at the time of day you plan to take the exam. Wi-Fi can be unreliable, so use an ethernet cable if possible.
  • Update your browser. Most proctoring platforms require the latest version of Chrome, Edge, or their custom secure browser. Update the day before, not the morning of.
  • Close unnecessary applications. Some proctoring software will refuse to launch if certain applications are running (VPNs, screen sharing tools, messaging apps, cloud sync services like Dropbox or OneDrive).
  • Prepare your ID. Have your government-issued photo ID ready. The name on your ID must exactly match the name on your exam registration. If they do not match, your exam will be cancelled.

The Exam Room Setup

  • Clear your desk completely. Nothing on the desk except your computer, keyboard, mouse, and your ID. No papers, no books, no phones, no second monitors, no smartwatches, no water bottles (check your specific provider’s rules — some allow a clear water bottle).
  • Clear the walls. Remove or cover any whiteboards, posters, or notes visible from your desk. The proctor will scan your room.
  • Ensure proper lighting. The proctor needs to see your face clearly. Avoid backlighting (sitting in front of a window) and very dim lighting.
  • Close and lock the door. No one can enter the room during the exam. Inform household members that you cannot be interrupted.
  • Position your webcam. The proctor will ask you to show your entire room, including under your desk, before the exam starts. Make sure your webcam can rotate or that you can move your laptop to show the room.

Exam Morning

  • Log in 30 minutes early. The check-in process (ID verification, room scan, agreeing to terms) takes 10-20 minutes. Starting early prevents rushing.
  • Close all browser tabs except the exam. Some proctoring software monitors your browser and will flag or pause your exam if other tabs are detected.
  • Disable notifications. Turn off all system notifications, especially calendar reminders, email alerts, and messaging app popups.
  • Use the restroom. You cannot leave your seat during the exam unless the exam has scheduled breaks (AWS exams have an optional 10-minute break).

Test Center Exam Checklist

Before Leaving Home

  • Bring two forms of ID. Most test centers require a primary government-issued photo ID (passport, driver’s license) and a secondary form of ID (credit card with signature, work ID badge). Check your exam provider’s specific requirements.
  • Know your confirmation number. Have your exam registration confirmation email accessible.
  • Plan your route. Know exactly how to get to the test center and how long it takes. Account for traffic and parking.
  • Do NOT bring: Cell phones (you will be required to store them), smart watches, notes, books, bags (stored in a locker), food, or drinks. Test centers provide lockers for personal items.

At the Test Center

  • Arrive 30 minutes early. Late arrivals may forfeit their exam and fee. Most centers begin check-in procedures 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
  • Complete the sign-in process. This includes showing your ID, having your photo taken, agreeing to the exam policies, and storing your personal belongings in a locker.
  • Request earplugs if needed. Most test centers offer earplugs or noise-canceling headphones. Other candidates will be typing nearby. If noise bothers you, ask for them during check-in.
  • You will receive a whiteboard or scratch paper. Use it for calculations, diagrams, or notes during the exam. You cannot bring your own.

During the Exam: Time Management Strategy

The 1-Minute-Per-Question Rule

Most cloud certification exams give you approximately 1.5-2 minutes per question. Use this pacing strategy:

  • First pass (1 minute per question): Read the question, eliminate obviously wrong answers, select your best answer. If you are unsure after 60 seconds, flag the question and move on.
  • Second pass (flagged questions): After completing all questions, return to flagged questions with your remaining time. Often, later questions will trigger insights about earlier ones.
  • Final review (last 10 minutes): Quickly scan all answers. Only change an answer if you have a clear reason to. Research consistently shows that first instincts are correct more often than changed answers.

The Process of Elimination

When you are unsure of the answer, elimination is your best tool:

  1. Read all four options before choosing
  2. Eliminate any option that is factually incorrect (wrong service name, incorrect limit, impossible configuration)
  3. Eliminate any option that does not address the specific requirement in the question
  4. Between remaining options, choose the one that best satisfies all constraints mentioned in the scenario

On most cloud exams, you can reliably eliminate 2 options on questions you find difficult. A 50/50 guess is much better than a 25% random guess.

Watch for Keywords

Exam questions contain intentional keywords that point to the correct answer:

  • “Most cost-effective” — Eliminate options using premium services when cheaper alternatives exist
  • “Minimum operational overhead” — Points toward managed services and serverless
  • “Highest availability” — Points toward multi-AZ, multi-Region, and redundancy
  • “Least privilege” — Eliminate options granting broader permissions than necessary
  • “Real-time” — Eliminate batch processing options
  • “Decouple” — Points toward message queues and event-driven architecture

Anxiety Management

Exam anxiety is normal and affects even experienced professionals. A small amount of anxiety is actually helpful — it sharpens focus. But too much anxiety impairs your ability to think clearly.

Before the Exam

  • Sleep normally. Do not stay up late cramming. Your brain consolidates learning during sleep. A full night of rest is more valuable than 3 extra hours of study.
  • Eat a balanced meal. Avoid heavy meals that cause drowsiness and avoid skipping meals entirely. Your brain needs glucose to perform.
  • Light review only. Skim your notes or do 10-15 easy practice questions to build confidence. Do not start learning new material on exam day.

During the Exam

  • Deep breathing. If anxiety spikes, take 3 slow deep breaths (4 seconds in, 4 seconds hold, 4 seconds out). This activates your parasympathetic nervous system and reduces the stress response.
  • Positive self-talk. Replace “I don’t know this” with “I’ve prepared for this and I can work through it.” This sounds simple, but cognitive behavioral research confirms it reduces test anxiety.
  • Use the breaks. If your exam offers scheduled breaks (AWS offers a 10-minute optional break), take them. Stand up, stretch, drink water, and reset mentally.
  • Skip and return. If a question triggers panic, flag it immediately and move on. Often your subconscious will process it while you work on other questions, and the answer will be clearer when you return.

After the Exam

Immediate Results

Most cloud certification exams provide immediate results:

  • AWS: Pass/fail result displayed on screen immediately. Detailed score report available in your AWS Certification account within 5 business days.
  • Azure: Pass/fail result displayed on screen immediately with a score report.
  • GCP: Results typically available within 7-10 business days. You will not know your result immediately.
  • PMI (PMP/CAPM): Preliminary pass/fail displayed at the test center. Official result confirmed via email within days.

If You Pass

Congratulations. Your digital badge and certificate will be available within 1-5 business days depending on the provider. Update your LinkedIn, resume, and professional profiles immediately. The sooner you make the credential visible, the sooner it starts working for your career.

If You Do Not Pass

This is not a failure. It is data. Your score report will show your performance by domain. Use this to target your additional study time.

Retake policies vary:

  • AWS: 14-day waiting period before retaking. No limit on total attempts.
  • Azure: 24-hour wait for the first retake, 14 days for subsequent retakes. Maximum 5 attempts per year per exam.
  • GCP: 14-day wait after first attempt, 60 days after second attempt, 365 days after third attempt.
  • PMI: 14-day wait. Maximum 3 attempts per eligibility year.

Use the waiting period productively. Focus exclusively on the domains where you scored lowest.

The Night Before: A Simple Routine

  1. Do a light 20-minute review of your weakest domain
  2. Set your alarm with a 30-minute buffer
  3. Prepare your ID and any materials you need
  4. Get 7-8 hours of sleep
  5. Trust your preparation
